    Uplink MIMO schemes in local area time division duplex system

    One of 3rd Generation Partnership Projects's release 9 research areas is deployment and improvement of Long Term Evolutions's Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access interface in local area cells, using time division duplex and 100MHz available bandwidth. For uplink part of this system, we revise and study MIMO algorithms considered in release 8's downlink (Cyclic Delay Diversity and Space-Frequency Block Codes open-loop schemes, Singular Value Decomposition and codebook-based closed-loop schemes), look for new alternatives, and simulate impacts of given scenario - reciprocity, correlated MIMO channels, slow fading etc. As a result, we draw conclusions about advantages of having multiple transmit antennas in User Equipment in contrast with higher price and power consumption

    Contributions to Analysis and Mitigation of Cochannel Interference in Cellular Wireless Networks

    Cellular wireless networks have become a commodity. We use our cellular devices every day to connect to others, to conduct business, for entertainment. Strong demand for wireless access has made corresponding parts of radio spectrum very valuable. Consequently, network operators and their suppliers are constantly being pressured for its efficient use. Unlike the first and second generation cellular networks, current generations do not therefore separate geographical sites in frequency. This universal frequency reuse, combined with continuously increasing spatial density of the transmitters, leads to challenging interference levels in the network. This dissertation collects several contributions to analysis and mitigation of interference in cellular wireless networks. The contributions are categorized and set in the context of prior art based on key characteristics, then they are treated one by one. The first contribution encompasses dynamic signaling that measures instantaneous interference situations and allows only for such transmissions that do not harm each other excessively. A novel forward signaling approach is introduced as an alternative to traditional reverse signaling. Forward signaling allows the interference management decisions to be done at the receiver, where there is more relevant information available. The second contribution analyzes cross-link interference in heterogeneous networks. Cross-link interference is interference between downlink and uplink transmissions that can appear in time-division duplex (TDD) networks. It is shown that uplink reception of small cells can be disturbed considerably by macrocell downlink transmissions. We proposes an intuitive solution to the problem based on power control. Users in small cells have generally enough power headroom as the distance to the small base station is often short. The third contribution provides an extensive analysis of a specific interference managment method that the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) applies in cochannel heterogeneous deployments. We analyze this so-called time muting using a modern stochastic geometry approach and show that performance of the method strongly depends on residual interference in the muted sections of time. The fourth and last contribution analyzes the impact of interference rank, i.e., number of spatial streams at the interferer, on a beamformed or spatially block coded transmission. It is shown that when the interferer chooses to transmit multiple spatial streams, spreading the power in spatial domain has potential to decrease probability of outage at neighbor receiver, especially if the neighbor transmission uses beamforming

    Salivary microbiome composition changes after bariatric surgery

    Recent studies show that the salivary microbiome in subjects with obesity differ from those without obesity, but the mechanism of interaction between the salivary microbiome composition and body weight is unclear. Herein we investigate this relation by analyzing saliva samples from 35 adult patients with obesity undergoing bariatric surgery. Our aim was to describe salivary microbiome changes during body weight loss on an individual-specific level, and to elucidate the effect of bariatric surgery on the salivary microbiome which has not been studied before. Analysis of samples collected before and 1 day after surgery, as well as 3 and 12 months after surgery, showed that the salivary microbiome changed in all study participants, but these changes were heterogeneous. In the majority of participants proportions of Gemella species, Granulicatella elegans, Porphyromonas pasteri, Prevotella nanceiensis and Streptococcus oralis decreased, while Veillonella species, Megasphaera micronuciformis and Prevotella saliva increased. Nevertheless, we found participants deviating from this general trend which suggests that a variety of individual-specific factors influence the salivary microbiome composition more effectively than the body weight dynamics alone. The observed microbiome alternations could be related to dietary changes.     Anaplastic astrocytoma mimicking progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy: a case report and review of the overlapping syndromes

    Abstract Background Co-occurrence of multiple sclerosis (MS) and glial tumours (GT) is uncommon although occasionally reported in medical literature. Interpreting the overlapping radiologic and clinical characteristics of glial tumours, MS lesions, and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) can be a significant diagnostic challenge. Case presentation We report a case of anaplastic astrocytoma mimicking PML in a 27-year-old patient with a 15-year history of MS. She was treated with interferon, natalizumab and finally fingolimod due to active MS. Follow-up MRI, blood and cerebrospinal fluid examinations, and biopsy were conducted, but only the latter was able to reveal the cause of progressive worsening of patient’s disease. Conclusions Anaplastic astrocytoma misdiagnosed as PML has not yet been described. We suppose that the astrocytoma could have evolved from a low grade glioma to anaplastic astrocytoma over time, as the tumour developed adjacent to typical MS plaques. The role of the immunomodulatory treatment as well as other immunological factors in the malignant transformation can only be hypothesised. We discuss clinical, laboratory and diagnostic aspects of a malignant GT, MS lesions and PML. The diagnosis of malignant GT must be kept in mind when an atypical lesion develops in a patient with MS
